Is Dance your passion? Do you daydream about choreography to the beats you hear on the radio? Working alongside your Artist in Residence, you will explore dance technique, enhancement, and stretch your skills as a dancer. At JCC Maccabi ArtsFest® you will be on your feet with a professional choreographer as you expand your movement vocabulary, learn new pieces, grow your dramatic and technical range, and perfect pieces that showcase your talent as a dancer and challenge you to learn something new. All of this hard work will go into performing these pieces in front of your peers at the JCC Maccabi® Final ArtsFest Showcase.

Introducing our 2019 Dance AIR – Jimmy Locust (Returning) 

Jimmy Locust is the artistic director and owner of Locust Performing Arts Center. He has shared his talents internationally, working with superstars Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, Paula Abdul, Quincy Jones and Debbie Allen. He has appeared in music videos and films and has performed at the Academy Awards, Grammy Awards, and MTV Video Music Awards.

Jimmy was one of the head choreographers for the opening and closing ceremonies of the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta and was nominated for an American Choreography Award in 2001 for his work on Warner Brothers’ television show “Nikki.” Jimmy worked on the Justin Bieber tour in 2010 and as choreographer for the CW Television Network’s “The Next” with hosts John Rich, Joe Jonas, Nelly and Gloria Estefan. Jimmy has also choreographed commercials for both international and national markets, including Sanyo (Japan) with Nicholas Cage and most recently, Rapid Advance (U.S.), which is currently running. He also designed and wrote dance education curricula for Connecticut organizations including Domus, Chester-Addison Community Center, Stamford Family YMCA, REACH Prep and Horizons. Jimmy has been a studio owner, master teacher, keynote speaker, and choreographer for more than two decades and has recently opened a second dance studio, Locust Dance Academy, in Miami. He is founder and director of Harmony Nation, an anti-bullying educational program that performs at area schools. He also directs the Locust Contemporary Dance Works Festival, which invites youth and professional companies from around the country for a weekend of masterclasses, culminating with the dancers performing in a concert on a New York City stage. Jimmy was appointed by the renowned Boca Ballet Theatre in Florida as a returning faculty member for its summer residency program where he specializes in teaching traditional jazz dance and contemporary classes. This is Jimmy’s fourth consecutive year as a Dance AIR. Jimmy started JCC Maccabi partnership as an adjudicator in 2015. His multi-faceted lifestyle is chronicled in his reality show, “Locust Under 5’.”

Audition Requirements – Dance 2019

What are we looking for?

  • A passion for dance and the enthusiasm to create and perform
  • An intermediate level in modern, jazz, ballet, or other styles
  • The desire to stretch yourself, take risks and work individually and collectively with one another to create and perform a dance that is of and from you
  • Familiarity with different dance forms and an eagerness to expand your knowledge and skills
  • An intermediate level in modern, jazz, ballet, or other styles

In addition to answering the questions below, you must also submit a video sample of your work. Please record a video of yourself performing a solo set to music or in silence. This can be original or other choreography, based on a theme or concept that demonstrates passion, technical ability, and creative spirit. It should be no longer than 2 minutes.

Once you have recorded the video, please upload it to a site such as YouTube or Vimeo and copy and paste the link into your audition form.
